Barroso Bullshit Bingo for the 2011 State of the European Union address

UPDATE: See the follow-up post written after the speech with my scores.

Next Wednesday, 28 September at 9 am, EU Commission President Barroso will speak in front of the European Parliament, a speech that he and his communication advisors call “State of the Union” to make it look like Barroso was anything near the US president.

Already last year, we at have made fun of this “State of the European Union” (#SOTEU), and Jon was the first to call for a revival of our Barroso Bullshit Bingo this year.

The task is to find 10 buzzwords that el presidente will use in his speech, and to shout out “Bullshit” once he has mentioned all of them. Here’s my list:

  • Europe 2020
  • Crisis
  • EU tax
  • EFSF
  • Solidarity
  • Leadership
  • Credible currency
  • Fiscal consolidation
  • Commitment
  • Necessary actions

Last year, we followed up on Barroso’s SOTEU and the Buzzword Bingo with an article in New Europe, and I think if we had to write one this year ahead of the speech it wouldn’t look much different from what was written back then.

Barroso is not a good speaker and his speechwriters seem to be even worse. Not to mention that on a Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock, no regular EU citizen will have the time or interest to watch or listen to such a speech. So apart from playing Bullshit Bingo or being a Member of the European Parliament, there’s no reason to watch or listen.

Therefore: Join in the Bullshit Bingo and blog your list!
